ThruNite TN30 Flashlight - 3x Cree XM-L U2 - 3000 Lumens Review

I got my TN30 thru Amazon, via Thrunite. The build and support for this item are really top flight. Given it's $154.50 initial outlay, along with the necessary additional cost for batteries, ($20 - $60), and the pre-requisite need for a good battery charger ($30 - $45), buying into a proposition such as this requires the outcome be a very solid choice. The TN 30 is definitely a solid solution for a general purpose, one size fits all answer in HIGH power handheld torches.

There's no question it's bright. Really blindingly bright! Displays a very broad field of light, and an exceptional throw.

The TN 30 requires 3 18650s to be installed in it's battery carrier which inserts effortlessly as one unit, into the handle of the light once the head is twisted off. Fully `protected' 18650 batteries are required for use in this model, as said to me by Thrunite though they refused to say in their email to me, which brand or models of 18650s to seek out or to stay away from, neither did they say which ones were used to obtain the rated specs.

A tail cap click on/off switch closes or opens the supply of power to its 3 LEDs. Clicking it fully in or until it audibly or physically clicks, allows the unit to be constantly energized and used. It's a cinch. Stab the click on/off tail sw fully in, and either preselect or dial up the brightness you want! It's that simple. I actually zipped thru the different notches on the ring and noticed absolutely no issues regardless how slow or fast I went up & down the dial. It has very positive spots so choosing another power level is really easy and sure.

Output ranges from a all but useless 1 lumen (1200 hours) to 2780 lumen for 1.2 hours. Levels 3 (350 @ 10hr), 4 (930 @ 3.5 hr), and on level 5 (2580 lumen @ 2.5hr) will see the most duty. Full on & Strobe have the same output with Strobe having about 45 minutes more duration.

NOTE - once the tail cap switch is set to constant and the head unit is tightened down onto the body of the light, it is in a battery draining state. This state of pre-readiness or standby pulls a minor amount (65uA, as rated by the manual, some accounts say as much as 80+ micro Amps) of energy drain. Effectively this is of little consequence in practice, but drain is drain. To prevent ANY needless depletion of resources, simply twist the head unit slightly off the handle about a quarter turn. Viola! No mo' deleterious comsumption of energy.

During the first month of ownership, with 3 fresh Tinergy 3000 ma rechargeable slugs inside, casual use about the premises and on short trips out at night applying only intermittent operation seldom exceeding 1 or 2 minutes on TURBO or STROBE, I realized almost 3 weeks of trouble free nearly daily use. Not a flicker, flareout, or problem. When it ran dry, it just quits. Until that point, there will be some noticeable loss in output, but it is slightly seen, not dramatically displayed. Actually this note comes from hindsight rather than anything else, and was most prominent once fresh cells were in place. Not all protected 18650s are the same. Even those of the same model and brand are exactly the same values electrically in terms of their storage capacities. The higher the ma the longer it will produce energy. The TN 30 self regulates the voltage and using protected cells is one more level of safety for the light itself as they help to prevent overages or lessened power emissions.. some cells rated at 3000 ma actually contain only 2000 ma of storage. Buy well regarded rechargeable batteries, you'll be glad you did!

There are heat sinking fins along the base of the head unit. Even then, when it is on settings 4 or 5, for longer periods you can definitely feel the generated heat beginning to swell and being sinked down through the handle's surface material. I doubt anyone is going to engage level 6 or Level 7 strobe and hold it the entire 1.2 to 2.0 hours it is supposed to run without gloves or in ambient temps above 70F! it gets warm and much faster when set to its highest outputs!

I would liked to have had some warning on the power status instead of it just shuting down. But exchanging out the old and installing the fresher set of 18650s is a very easy and quite brief event. Even simpler and quicker if you have another holder already filled as a back up. Twist off the head, let the that holder slide out, and insert the replacement battery carrier by tilting the handle up and letting gravity drop it in, and then just re-secure the head unit. Takes about 10 seconds total. Otherwise, it takes about 25 - 30 seconds, if the fresh batteries are loose inside a bag or pocket. The head itself aligns well and twists on with some drag as it seats onto the handle showing how close those tolerances actually are and how well this device was designed and built.

The aluminum body of the TN30 is triangular but scored with ribs of this slightly coarse feeling surface between its 3 flat landings. This makes for a quite secure, non-slip bare hand purchase. It is however rotund if you are used to either slim pocket tactical LEDs, or standard D cell torches. It is not an uncomfortable grip; rather it is just hand filling. It's like holding a soda can with textured strips of material running from head to tail cap.

In accordance with its esthetically triangular but more roundish feeling shape, the recessed Tail sw cap has 3 wide openings so it can be easily accessed by finger or thumb. There you'll find machined slots you can run the supplied healthy sized lanyard thru as well. There is a substantial holster supplied, but fits into pants pockets pretty good too. The holster requires the head to be up and nearest the Velcro covering flap. It comes in a nice reasonably sturdy all plastic carry/display case with additional O rings, and it rests in a closed cell foam casket. A pair of thin metal snap over latches secure the contents within the plastic box.

The manual says it is shock resistant to 1.2 meters and meets some degree of waterproofing, but why would anyone wanna throw it or see if they can drown it?

The head unit bezel & tail cap have the often seen sharp depressions along their upper circumference. Why? For defensive striking? Sure! I can't wait! Fairly squat at 7 inches long, it does have heft once loaded with batteries.weighing in a bit over a pound and a quarter approximately. So, maybe

It tail stands perfectly for those long night camping trip card games inside the tent, or if you are a slow reader at the Port A Potty. Doesn't want to roll when on it's side. Yields a very strong roomm filling light when pointed towards a ceiling helping to prevent the user from being inadvertently or temporarily blinded by it's directly reflecting light bouncing off a wall, pavement, or tile floor.

It's not cheap, but it's build, support, ease of use, and quick one handed operation and overall feel make it a fine selection for an all around, no matter where or when light. The newer version is identical to this one but uses different more powerful, more battery draining emitters, and costs a lot more.

If you're only going to buy one flashlight, need one which really does reach well out there, has a nice wide spill, and a tight bright center spot and you want one which operates with only one hand with an easy to use interface, and switches quickly thru it's 7 diverse yet quite useful settings, and you don't want to have to select it's settings via various buttons using different amounts of pressure on them, this one needs to be on your short list, while they last!
