TrueCoat Plus Paint Sprayer (258863) Review

Like the first pocket calculator, Graco has created a really cool gadget. As with all prototypes there is room for improvement. I have been a painting contractor for 20 years. Never had I the pleasure of using such a unique tool. Knowing Graco's ambition for quality, I know I will give the TrueCoat or ProShot a five star rating in the near future. In my review I will list the Pros and Cons in using Graco's new paint sprayer.

The Pros:

Time is money. One of the hardest obstacles for a painting contractor are painting metal doors or any door. Using a brush leaves ugly brush strokes. I had been using a High Volume Low Pressure or an HVLP sprayer for many years. The aluminum cup gun was very hard to clean, prone to clogging, and slow to paint a door. I resorted to using an airless paint sprayer which takes almost a quart to prime and a gallon to paint a door. There are other hassles using an airless sprayer for small projects: a cumbersome 50' hose, heavy weight 60+lbs, and the amount of water, mess, and time for cleaning.

There are 2 types of Graco cordless sprayers. The TrueCoat and the ProShot. I own a ProShot. What's the difference? The ProShot is sold exclusively at Sherwin Williams Paint Stores. Unlike the TrueCoat, the ProShot can be repacked. The TrueCoat and ProShot are designed to spray up to 50 gallons of paint. The ProShot can be rebuilt to shoot another 50 gallons according to Graco and Sherwin Williams. The TrueCoat could be ready for the landfill after 50 gallons have been sprayed through it. Before eyebrows are raised, it takes less than a quart to paint most doors. That's 200 plus doors! Professionals charge between $100 to $150 to paint a door. That's up to $30,000 dollars of painting! Not a bad return on a $300.00 sprayer. Do not paint an entire house with either unit. These sprayers were not designed for volume painting. The ProShot, unlike the TruCoat, is designed to fit Sherwin williams paint quarts with screw top lids. There are a wide variety of paint tips for both units. Both sprayers can spray stains and latex paint. The tips are not interchangeable. Being that a 515 latex spray tip off a ProShot cannot be used on a TrueCoat paint sprayer. Both units come with a 411 spray tip used for stains and a 515 tip used for latex paint. There are other spray tips available but are sold as accessories. I have been using a 411 size spray tip to paint metal doors, using latex paint. A light prime coat followed with a finish coat will give a near automotive finish with a little practice..

Both the TrueCoat and ProShot come with 2 lithium batteries. These are interchangeable for either unit. I can double coat six doors with one battery. The ProShot and TrueCoat leave a nice sprayed finish coat and automatically adjusts for the viscosity of the paint. There is no thinning of paint required. Very Cool!

When spraying a wood stain or wood toner, coatings with little viscosity, there is a green plug that reduces the intake of the siphon tube. Spraying overhead cedar eves with Sherwin Williams DeckScape's Wood Toner was a breeze. The toner was an acrylic sealer. We didn't have to worry about over- spray. The ProShot's cup needing filling often but the 411 tip applied the toner well with little to no mess. The redwood toner looked great and the eves were stained in in record time.

Again over-spray can damage furniture, cars, boats ect..Professional painters often spend more time masking than painting. This summer I repainting baseboards in a house. We masked the carpet with 12" masking paper and sprayed the baseboards using the Graco ProShot. Normally this would take hours being on our knees with a roller and paint brush. We were finished with the job in just a few hours. There were no over-spray issues. The Graco ProShot was the tool necessary for achieving maximum profit. The baseboards along with my customer's smile looked great!

These sprayers are wonderful for projects 3 gallons or less. If you have wicker furniture, metal chairs and tables, filing cabinets, whatever? It is the painting tool. Being that the product is new, there is room for improvement.

The Cons:

The Graco TrueCoat and ProShot come with plastic bags that line the inside of the plastic paint cup. The idea? One will not have to clean the cup and drain the remaining paint back into a paint can. However, the plastic cup is the easiest thing to clean. Both the ProShot and TruCoat have a threaded cup that screws onto the paint gun. When the cup is full of paint this can be difficult to screw onto the gun. Graco should design a clamping system to make quick cup removal and replacement. The threads also get contaminated with paint and is hard to clean unless the plastic liner is used. Eventually one will run out of liners and use the bare cup.

My ProShot did not spray 50 gallons of paint before it died. After owning the sprayer for a little over 6 months, the motor died and one of the batteries were charging poorly. It had half the life of the other lithium battery. I took the sprayer back to Sherwin Williams and was given a new ProShot. It was under warranty.

There is room for improvement on spraying overhead work. Perhaps in the future Graco will have a 2 gallon pressurized backpack paint container? One could wear a container with a hose leading to the spray cup or the sprayer itself? The sprayer currently sucks air when the gun is tilted when spraying any over-head work. Frequent priming is necessary along with frequent paint filling. The ProShot or TruCoat, if tilted out of a horizontal position, becomes harder to use when the paint cup becomes half full. A design flaw..

I had problems with the ProShot spitting paint..After a few months of use, the paint sprayer would occasionally belch globs of paint. I called a Graco tech who mentioned that the tip was not clean. By running a quart of water through the tip, I knew that the tip was not the problem. Still, I have no answers why this occurred.

With the short comings listed, I am still delighted with this product. I don't know why Graco decided to make a re-packable unit, the ProShot, exclusive for Sherwin Williams? Personally I think it is a marketing error..Graco should design a cordless paint sprayer that: has good batteries and motor, is easy to fill, holds at least a gallon or more of paint, can be used to spray ceilings without loosing prime, and is easy to clean. This is, however, their first attempt of making a cordless paint sprayer. There is only room for improvement. I would gladly purchase a new unit today if I did not own one.
