This bed extension is necessary if you are going to do longer material, like spindles, baseball bats, and roughing out of longer logs. The lathe is very stable, even with the extension in place. It bolts on and fits quite well. Note that you might have to file the transition area between the ways, a five minute job, to avoid the "railroad effect" when you move the tailstock over the seam. You don't want to file the top; but the sides may need a bit of work. Like the outrigger tool rest, this is a well-built, sturdy addition to the lathe.

Although the instructions cover this subject, I will mention that before final tightening of the bolts that hold this item in place, while the fit is loose enough to move the extension, you must straddle the tailstock over the joint and lock it down. This lines up the ways. Then you tighten the bolts. After that, unlock the tailstock and slide it back and forth. If it makes a knocking sound when it hits the joint, the filing will be necessary.

Note: don't get too aggressive with the file or especially if you plan to use a grinder, which I don't recommend. The ways need to be fairly uniform on the sides and dead even on the horizontal surface.

I suggest you have someone help you hold up the extension while you install the bolts as it is fairly heavy.

Unpacking, removal of the preservative, installation, adjusting (filing), and lubrication took me less than twenty minutes.
